SPIKY BALL CLASSES

What is a Spiky Ball?
A spiky ball is a round ball with raised spikes made from durable rubber (preferred) or hard plastic varying in size from 6cm to 10cm. Spiky balls were developed to assist athletes to perform self-massage exercises and enhance muscle release. Although, they quickly became an integral part of athlete’s recovery program.
Spiky balls are now commonplace in many households and are also importantly used to help with postural problems and occupational tension and soreness.
What is a Spiky Ball class?
This class is 60 minutes of focused time to relieve muscle tension and pain from activity, occupational, sport or general day-to-day living. Nowadays there is a smorgasbord of equipment/tools to aid in recovery and assist with rehabilitation and this class is focused on using spiky balls, lacrosse balls and TheraBand’s.
All areas of the body can be worked on including plantar foot (sole of the foot), calves, peroneals, lower leg muscles, quadriceps, hamstrings, ITB, gluteals, piriformis, hip flexors (TFL), erector spinae (back) and shoulders. Different techniques with the ball are used for different muscles to best suit the anatomy of the body being worked on.
Stretches of these areas can also be included to decrease muscle tension, decrease pain or soreness, increase range of motion and restore or improve functional movement.
Most of us are living with muscular imbalances from current or past injuries/conditions and this class helps to understand what is occurring within the body.
How was this class created?
While attending Yin Yoga teacher training in January 2019, I was carrying a significant back injury which prevented me from participating in a particular session. Instead of sitting and watching, I decide I would try and use the spiky ball on all of the areas they were working on and before I knew it, 60min had passed. As an athlete myself, the spiky ball is my “go to”, as you are able to target specific areas much better than with a foam roller (this is my personal opinion). It is also much easier to travel with for international competitions and provides ready-made massage. Therefore, the seed was planted to create a class for athletes to learn how to effectively use a spiky ball and empower them to take charge of their own self-care and assist with injury reduction.
Within a short time of commencing the classes, I was inviting my regular and new Myotherapy clients to join as a way of learning how to use the spiky ball to target the specific soft tissue areas they needed as part of their treatment plan.
Do I need a spiky ball to do the class?
Yes, you will but you could use a tennis ball until you can purchase a spiky ball. When I first started working with cyclists over 20 years ago, all we had was a tennis ball. While it was useful then, a spiky ball is far superior in reducing targeted muscle tension.
What do I need for a Spiky Ball class?
Non-restrictive clothing that ideally covers the legs
Spiky ball (preferred) or tennis ball
Lacrosse ball preferred or smaller hard round ball e.g. golf ball
TheraBand or towel.
The class also includes stretches that can be utilised in self-care including the shoulder tension muscles (upper trapezius and levator scapulae) and may include forearm work to help with extensor tendinopathies, commonly known as tennis or golfers elbow.
