YIN YOGA CLASSES

What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is a known form of yoga. It is mostly floor-based utilising props and holding poses for 2-5 minutes. This style of yoga focuses on the fascia of the body, with the muscles in a passive state.

What is Fascia?

  • Fascia is a collagen-rich connective tissue which complements bones, ligaments and tendons to provide protection and support throughout the softer tissues of the body and skin. Fascia surrounds each muscle fiber, every muscle bundle and all muscles.

  • It is like a spider-web that provides continuous connections throughout the body.

  • The fascia not only runs in straight lines but also diagonal and spiral lines throughout the body. If you have a tight spot in your left calf, it could affect not only your left hamstring and left hip but also the right shoulder.

What happens in a Yin Yoga class?
Yin yoga is good for many reasons. For me, the most important are:

  • Yin allows restoration of the fascial tissue, which assists to increase range of motion and functional movement.

  • It truly allows us to connect into our bodies and be in touch with the more subtle sensations.

  • Yin yoga allows us to slow down and step outside of our ‘normal’ yang lifestyles of always being busy. You have the choice to focus on your breath or your own individual form of meditation.

  • Yin yoga can help with the path to wellbeing and assists with mental health.

Who wouldn’t want to try a class with pose names such as Butterfly, Seal, Frog and Dragon.

Why was this class created?

  • I have created my Yin Yoga classes with the inflexible athlete in mind. As with other high-level athletes, I found my triathlon training led to a decrease in range of motion in my hips and shoulders, which benefitted from yin yoga.

  • As a Myotherapist, the fascial system is one of my passions. I was excited to combine yoga and myofascial approaches to reduce pain and tension and increase range of motion. For athletes, this improved functional movement capability can ultimately transfer to improved performance.

Do I need to be flexible?

  • People of all abilities and flexibilities are encouraged to try a class. The truly beautiful part of yin yoga is that everyone is in harmony and listening to their own bodies. You have one pose but may have ten variations to suit individual limitations, injuries or conditions.

  • If your body is less flexible, you will really appreciate how Yin feels during the class and the changes in your body over time.

What do I need for a Yin Yoga class?

  • Yoga bolster (otherwise pillows or cushions of various sizes of a foam roller)

  • Yoga blocks (otherwise small rolled-up towels or cushions)

  • TheraBand (or towel)
